ITUC participation in the Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting for the CSD-19
The Intergovernmental Preparatory Meeting (IPM) for the nineteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD19) took place from 21-25 February 2011, at UN headquarters in New York.
The IPM’s role was to elaborate a draft negotiating text for the CSD (to be held in May 2-13) identifying policy options and possible actions concerning transport, chemicals, mining, waste and the 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production.
The workers and trade unions major group was able to speak in six out of eleven sessions.
Key union demands, while mentioned several times in the plenary, had not been taken by the Chair. This includes mentions to decent work and just transition in the mining & transport sector, the role of trade unions in all the areas mentioned, and a regulatory approach to production in the discussion on SCP, among others.
Recommended action for follow up:
- Send a message to our delegates to the CSD and to government delegations indicating the need for amending this text and sending concrete proposals
- Inform the Secretariat on our requests.
