EFFAT Climate Change Conference: Climate is changing. What about workers?

-Fight climate change-save jobs in agriculture, food and tourism-

Venue: European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels : 24 September 2009

Labour market and the future of workers from agriculture, food and tourism sectors are being directly concerned and affected by climate change. Two of the most important sources of income for the rural areas, agriculture and tourism are sometimes disputing natural resources. The probability of reduced production in some EU regions, the alterations in seasonal patterns and possibly increased farmers costs as a result of climate change will have knock-off effects for the food and drink industry.

What is the future of workers from the three sectors?

The answers to this question shall be disputed during two days time: first in an internal EFFAT meeting on the 23^rd, then furthermore at your disposal in the public conference on the 24^th September.

For the European Metalworkers Federation climate change is a dangerous reality which demands a social response at international as well as European, national and regional/local and company levels. We believe that a drive towards new industrial strategies based on low carbon technologies and products can offer opportunities but also challenges for the future of industrial workplaces in Europe.

EFFAT's view on sustainable development

Sustainable development seeks to "meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” in the sense of balance between economic, social and environmental elements. Still, increasingly rapid global changes, from the melting of the icecaps to growing energy and resource demand, are challenging this objective.
